Never mind that the artwork looks like it comes from a lost GeoCities website - Xorcist's "Nomad" is an overlooked masterpiece (the ratings distribution certainly confirms this here). And why not? You have a man highly involved in the underground cybergoth and EBM scene who puts out standard fare albums throughout the nineties, and all of a sudden he releases an introspective, (mostly) instrumental, decidedly anti-club, ambient industrial soundtrack while club kids everywhere cry out over the epic betrayal. But yours truly feeds on the tears of betrayed scenester children. By 1999, the cliches of post-industrial/post-EBM whatevers were firmly established and on the verge of being played out. Very few artists had the gall to forge something interesting. And this is the direction that our scene's best music should have evolved towards - an unapologetic hybrid of sometimes-harsh beats, slightly atonal ambient-trance soundscapes, and sporadic vocals and haunting sound effects. Instead we got synthpop and futurepop. Yay."Nomad" is an album that seems unencumbered by the necessary technical limitations of the newly emerging turn-of-the-century digital instrumentality (a quality of many classic video game soundtracks, I might add), and holds within it the journey of a man who makes us believe that he has seen something on the other side, all ultimately lost in the shuffle of the clone army that made (makes) up the roster of Metropolis Records. Regardless, it is highly recommended, even to those who would fail to appreciate it.
Not sure why I never saw this review of Nomad but thank you for it! And yes, back when this was printed, GeoCities I believe WAS the shit haha!
