Notes

"Made in Australia by Tempo Record Sales Pty. Ltd"

This was previously widely regarded as the first ever 12" single: Swamp Dogg - Straight From My Heart

But evidence suggests that Buddy Fite - For Once In My Life / Glad Rag Doll is from 1970 so this would probably now be considered the first.

In any case, I believe this super rare J.J. Cale Promo from Australia having a 1971 release date, which in itself makes it quite an oddity.

What leads me to believe this 12" dates back to 1971 is:

a/ The Shelter Records logo on this one was only used from '70 till mid '72

b/All other variations of this release are from 1971 including the commercially released Australian 7" with the same catalogue
number J.J. Cale - Crazy Mama

c/ The record charted in Australia in '72

This seems to be a promo released to radio in 1971 that was pressed on 12" vinyl as a gimmick at the time to get the attention of media (see "we have a very BIG" single for you" image which was stuck on the jacket).

I have also attached the original promo sheet which was inside the record in the images

Probably not the first 12" single ever made, but this would have to be one of the first, and most probably the first Australian 12" single unless somebody can come up with something older.

Trumped by Buddy Fite, which according to an article in Billboard Magazine was released as a 12 inch single in March 1970...

This is an artefact that belongs in a museum of music history! Priceless!
