Back in 1990-'91 I bought so many of the Tommy Boy "12" Cassettes" that came out (basically, they'd just issue their extended 12" singles on cassette as well, with the confusing format "12" Cassette" or "12" Cass" on the spine. In retrospect, a weird idea. Why not just say "Maxi-Single"? Almost as weird as labels occasionally putting "12" CD" on CD Maxis.) My favorites were the De La Soul ones, Queen Latifah, Digital Underground, Stetsasonic... and this one was probably the best of the bunch. The b-sides are weird and intricate, loopy, and yet thematically tied to the main track. The remixes push the original further into disco and house territory, until by the time you get to the Morales "Mo Mo Dub" version, it's barely recognizable as being a version of "Roller Skating Jam" at all, except for some impressionistic chords and notes, and a loose summertime dancefloor energy. Even that cover artwork: so good. I often saved my lunch money to go to the record store and spend my $4.99 (or $5.99? I can't remember clearly) for whatever was new that week. Halcyon days, I tell you.
